Does mead contain sulphites naturally?

That means a mead can contain sulphites even where none have been deliberately added during production. No added sulphites means the producer has not intentionally added sulphites during production. It does not necessarily mean the mead contains absolutely no sulphites, because fermentation can create them naturally.
Sulphite-free is a term worth reading with particular care. In practical terms, it may mean no sulphites were added or that the sulphite level sits below a reportable threshold. If you need to avoid sulphites for health reasons, the most reliable course is to ask the producer directly about the specific vintage or batch rather than relying on broad marketing language.
Are sulphites in mead something to worry about?
For most people, sulphites in the amounts used in alcoholic drinks are not a concern. They have been used in winemaking and food preservation for generations because they help maintain quality and reduce the risk of spoilage.
A small number of people are sensitive to sulphites, particularly some people with asthma. Reactions can vary and may be serious for susceptible individuals. This is precisely why clear labelling matters.
